Shyriath was the only child of Shemrath, an Unchosen woman who lived on an isolated homestead, and Haazrath, a Chosen water elementalist. Shemrath is now deceased; although Haazrath was still alive at the time Shyriath left the Citadel, his deteriorating mental state meant that father and son had drifted apart by that point. Shyriath has not seen him since.

As both parents were not on speaking terms with their families since before Shyriath was born, he has never met any relatives. He has no wife or children.

Prior to his departure from the Citadel, Shyriath worked in a kind of psychiatric care facility staffed by mentalists. Though he was not a very social person, for a time he bonded quite closely with a girl who also worked there.

More recently, he has become involved in Evrith's quest to prevent the future heralded by the figure in white and the group centered around it:

• Evrith: a female Chosen takma, met while Evrith and An-uxhwi fled from Torniim south through the desert, rather younger than Shyriath is. His initial meeting with them, and his misinterpretation of his circumstances, led to him taking exotic measures to subdue Evrith; this started them off on the wrong foot from the beginning, and incompatibilities in personality and alignment have not improved matters. He defers to her out of acknowledgement of her powers and her unique ability to guide the quest, and follows out of a belief in what she is trying to do, but he does not get along consistently with her and has serious concerns about her judgment.
• An-uxhwi: a youngish xtauh male who has attached himself to Evrith as a devotee. Despite some initial friction surrounding the circumstances of their meeting, the two are cordial toward one another, though not close. Shyriath appreciates his serious demeanor and generally clear thinking, and, by and large, considers him the most reliable of his companions.
• Tikke and Unitti: a pair of male xtauh around Evrith's age, encountered during the events at Oraa and swept up along with the others. Though linguistic difficulties impede their conversations, he gets along well with Unitti, whose diplomatic, philosophical outlook he finds appealing. His relations with Tikke, by contrast, are frosty; he finds his tendencies toward levity, hot-headedness, and curiosity to be both a liability to the group and personally aggravating.
