Heritage and identification

Other

Physical

Overall description and build

Evrith is largely rust-colored, with small patches of red on her chest, belly, and the insides of her upper forelimbs. She is of roughly average size for a female Chosen. Her head and muzzle have a pointed, streamlined appearance, reflecting her littoral ancestry, but unlike many others of that kind, she is not well-padded: between malnutrition and her other health problems, she looks rather underfed.

Facial description

Evrith's face is narrow and somewhat less defined than the stereotypical female; her muzzle is long and pointed. Her eyes are a washed-out green verging on gray. Her facial markings are a series of parallel stripes on each side of her head, running down and forward from just below the centerline of her muzzle and forehead. Reflecting Evrith's poor self-perception, the markings are very pale.

Apparel and accessories

Evrith has no personal adornments that she's been able to keep on a long-term basis; anything she wears at this point is utilitarian and situational.

Mentality

Motivation

Evrith has become very attached to her quest to try to save the world from the threat of the mysterious figure in white from her visions. If asked, she ascribes this not to any sort of selflessness, but to a desire to have at least one thing that she can feel good about, a positive result from her life to give it meaning that - given its likely brevity, unpleasant course, and end - it might not otherwise have. While she takes relatively little pleasure in living, she is resolved to stay alive at least until her quest, successful or not, has reached its end. That, in order to achieve this, there is a minimum amount of self-care involved, is something she seems occasionally blind to, whether willfully or not.

Virtues, vices, and flaws

Evrith is a faithful friend; though not entirely selfless, she makes a point of trying to use her abilities to aid those with whom she has grown close. She also tries hard to avoid taking advantage of them, though she is well aware that she is sometimes tempted to do so and that she has given in to that temptation on rare occasions in the past, and she fears that she will do so again. She avoids lying about the future or past if she thinks she can help it, but has no qualms about remaining strategically silent if she feels someone should not know something.

By contrast, she is somewhat less constrained in regards to strangers, at least as long as they are not particularly vulnerable people. Stealing is something that she is good at, and is one of the few things she takes a small amount of pride in when she does it well; and while she does not go out of her way to hurt or kill, she is quite willing to gut someone like a fish if the situation demands it.

She reserves her harshest criticism for herself, and is subject to a certain amount of unspoken self-flagellation; she tends to focus on words and situations that reinforce and deepen her perception of her flaws, and to give less weight to those that highlight her good points.

Evrith enjoys the feelings brought about by alcohol and finds being drunk to be preferable to her normal state of mind. Though she does not encounter enough drink to have become a literal alcoholic, she probably would if she did.

Intellectual characteristics

Evrith was once far more enthusiastically curious than she has since become, and a tendency to seek out knowledge is still a habit that's hard to break - but it is indeed a habit now, a survival tactic rather than something done out of enjoyment. Much the same applies to cerebration; she spends much of her time trying to think before acting - if there is time to do so - but the same habit tends to develop into brooding when applied to introspection.

Being an oracle has allowed her to learn far more than she ever wanted and make aware of many dangers, but it makes it difficult, when the time comes, to turn her mind off in the way she finds necessary for relaxation.

Morality and philosophy

Generally speaking, Evrith believes strongly in freedom. As it applies to her ability to see the future, and her effects on it, she considers that the best outcome is one that expands the range of desirable futures that are open to a person, rather than limiting them. For her own behavior, this leads to something of a moral minefield, since there are few ways she can act toward other people that will not have some effect on their available futures, and she is desperately afraid of “trapping” people into certain possibilities. While she prefers to deal with this by providing people with information and letting them decide what to do with it, it can occasionally lead her towards more manipulative methods - providing long-term freedom of action at the cost of short-term controlling behavior.

As both a Kaean and a dweller on the societal margins, Evrith has little regard for laws and other rules of proper behavior, where she has much awareness of them at all; if she avoids transgressions, it is because she feels it right or at least prudent to do so rather than because anyone requires it.

Religious views

Evrith believes in the reality of the Siathar and Lamnar of the Imperial religion. That said, she is not affiliated with the Imperial religion in any formal sense, and does not engage in the practices of worship generally expected of an adherent. Though this is partly due to a Kaean dislike of formality in religious matters, it may be most ascribed to Evrith's conviction that she has offended the gods - through her attempt at kinslaying, if not for any of her other self-perceived faults - and that they are not only not interested in her entreaties, but have cursed her for her transgressions.

Her recent encounters with the followers of Uvuun have only strengthened this latter conviction, since it now appears that, not content with the foregone conclusion of Evrith being delivered to Him after a miserable death, He is now actively seeking her out to hasten her end.

Social aptitude

Evrith craves friendly contact, extended periods of solitude and avoiding Unchosen takmar having impressed a sense of loneliness and isolation on her. She is therefore inclined to be pleasant to those she sees will be pleasant to her. She is more tactful than one might expect from someone with her unusual upbringing, partly from having a precognitive sense of how others might react and partly from the habit of trying to appease her older brother; but she can still be quite blunt if she feels she needs to be.

Between a lack of self-confidence and the probabilistic nature of the future, she tends to avoid definitive statements and opinions unless she is very sure of them.

Growing up uprooted in her brother's care and isolated ever since, Evrith has largely failed to absorb the customs and etiquette of her people or any others, particularly those centered around gender roles. To nearly all others who interact with her, she comes off as a well-meaning foreigner, unschooled in “proper” behavior. With a Kaean's lack of interest in rules for rules' sake, it is unlikely that this situation will change significantly.

Likes, dislikes, and taboos

Evrith has mostly acquired the survivor's ability to give up likes and dislikes; she endures what she has to endure because she must, and on occasion she even seems to punish herself by seeking out unpleasantness. That said, she enjoys places and situations that cause her to feel as if she is experiencing home as it was before she and her brother were driven out - warm, moist winds, warm rocks and sand to bask on, the sight and smell of the sea, and the taste of saltwater fish.

She has few taboos other than those shared with most people who aren't actively evil or psychopathic.

Learned skills

Education

Evrith never received anything approaching a formal education. She cannot read or write; she can count to high numbers but can only perform basic math.

Occupation

Evrith is essentially an itinerant, moving constantly and subsisting through hunting, fishing, and theft, though the pursuit of her quest might also be considered an occupation.

Wealth and possessions

Evrith has very little to her name; most of what she carries now consists of supplies provided by Shyriath, Tikke, or Unitti and she does not really consider them hers. The only objects she approaches having feelings of ownership toward are several linking books obtained in Oraa, and since she stole them from their original owner, the moral rightness of her claim to them is debatable.

Personal history

Relationships

Family

Evrith's parents and remaining grandparents were killed by a mob in her village. While she has three or four older siblings who left home before this point, she was too young to have much of a relationship with the ones who were present when she was born, and they are effectively strangers to her.

Her relationship with her older brother Uruth was much closer, but fraught at best. He raised her, but being relatively young himself, he was not prepared for the difficulties of foster-parenting a young witch while remaining on the move; he came to resent and blame her for the way his life turned out, and the interactions that resulted played a large role in Evrith's psychological problems. After a particularly unpleasant incident in which Evrith, pushed to the breaking point, attempted to place Uruth in a fatal situation, Uruth left her. Evrith finds it particularly hard to forgive herself for this, and believes that the gods are punishing her for it.

Other individuals

Besides her brother, Evrith has largely remained out of extended social contact until relatively recently. The main exception was a period, in late 74 Cloud, during which she encountered and lived near an isolated xtauh woman of the Hnemekk ethnicity, from whom she learned Hnem Dwa and with whom she developed a wary but civil and mutually beneficial relationship. Evrith moved on after the woman died of illness.

More recently, she has acquired a group of (for lack of a better term) followers in her quest to neutralize the future threat of the figure in white:

  • An-uxhwi: a youngish xtauh male who, while both were enslaved in a silver mine near Torniim, nursed Evrith back to health and became her assistant in engineering the mass escape that freed them. An-uxhwi appears to have developed a devotion to Evrith that, while having some basis in gratitude and religious feeling, has an increasing personal element. Evrith is very touched by this and both enjoys his company and has come to rely on his support, but worries about what fate she will lead him to, particularly since she sees many futures in which their mutual liking turns into something deeper still.
  • Shyriath: a male Chosen takma, met while Evrith and An-uxhwi fled from Torniim south through the desert, not very old but cynical and suspicious beyond his years. Their initial meeting and Shyriath's misinterpretation of its circumstances led to a display of his mentalist and elementalist powers that left Evrith deeply resentful; between this incident, a certain incompatibility of personalities, and the frictions generated between a Kaean and a Srian who are both unused to managing their differences, the relationship between the two is rocky at best. Evrith recognizes Shyriath as an ally and as essentially a decent person, but they do not consistently get along with each other and make no great pretense of doing so.
  • Tikke and Unitti: a pair of male xtauh around Evrith's own age, encountered during the events at Oraa and swept up along with the others. Their relative lack of command of Imperial has slowed the process of getting to know them and she does not feel that she has much in common with them, but she finds them pleasant to be around, though Tikke's extravagant personality sometimes grows grating.

Affiliations

Circumstances have by and large forced Evrith into the position of a loner. She has only recently acquired a group of followers intending to aid her in her attempt to thwart the dangers of the figure in white.
