Heritage and identification

Other

Physical

Overall description and build

Enneth is a youngish female takma, thoroughly golden in color, though her back and the top of her head are a slightly darker shade than the rest. Neither willowy nor stocky, she is of an average build, but slightly padded in a way that rounds off her body and causes it, in certain respects, to taper smoothly. Combined with a long, somewhat conical muzzle, she looks rather hydrodynamic and indeed is a good swimmer, though a less accomplished flier.

Facial description

Enneth's facial markings are a darkish sort of tan, and are scattered around her head in shapes like triangles with slightly convex sides; her eyes are a dark blue.

Mentality

Motivation

Enneth is generally a laid-back soul, who would prefer neither to bother the world nor to have the world bother her. She wants to enjoy life, and feels that if only everyone else spent their time on that goal instead of bickering and interfering with each other, the world would be a far happier place. By the standards of takma social dominance, she is very much a beta female, if indeed not a gamma or delta; she has no interest in advancement beyond the material security it would afford her, and no interest at all in exerting herself upon others.

While not heedless of the promise of knowledge, she feels strongly that while it should meticulously collected and understood and preserved, actually employing it in ways that might change society is something that should be done rarely and judiciously.

When not undertaking a task for others, she spends her time at her various arts. She does not make a habit of brazenly showing them off, though the possibility that it might make her independently wealthy if she did is something she has considered.

Morality and philosophy

Religious views

While not strongly religious, Enneth identifies relatively strongly with Laishar the Singer, whose artistic temperament and joyful attitude she finds admirable; the actual works of Vorak the Scribe and of the Elder are more akin to her own, and she finds solace in the peace of Their roles, but feels somewhat stifled by Their solemnity. As none of the Children are known to be patrons of Writers, she offers no devotion to them.

She cannot relate much to most of the Lamnar, who represent powers she can only describe, never truly control. She makes such offerings to them as seems prudent, but otherwise avoids them as much as she can.

Enneth is relatively adept at the art of Writing. She has Written a number of books, both for herself and for Dlyss; the former tend to be more artistic, the latter utilitarian.

Personal history

Enneth was the youngest daughter and keenest pupil of Jenneth, herself a refugee to the Citadel. Jenneth, having been kept as an enslaved scribe to a Writer in the takma colonies of the Brightness, was employed only for her literacy and exquisite penmanship, but also silently absorbed the principles of enchanting and Writing through the tasks entrusted to her. She eventually fled and made her way to the Citadel, where she soon found herself one of very few Writers and easily the most accomplished.

Jenneth taught what she knew to other Writers, both established and new, and Enneth was among them. An artistic sort, Enneth preferred to Write for pleasure rather than gain, and dabbled in worlds strange and eerily beautiful for her to play in (and with). As an illusionist, she made her living doing scenery for plays, but found the pay to be relatively poor; even with an imagination for landscapes sharpened by the results of her Writing, illusionist were easily found and rarely handsomely paid.

Therefore, when Dlyss sent for Enneth to Write for her - and to perform some miscellaneous other duties when Writing was not required - she felt moved to accept, awed by the Oracle's fame and lured by her wealth. While now paid considerably more than she had been, and challenged to Write interesting worlds, her new vocation has been leaving her uneasy; while Dlyss has rarely been vague about what she wants Enneth to do, it bothers Enneth that she also rarely explains why - the motivations of the Oracle are opaque, and Enneth is unnerved at the idea that she might merely playing a part in someone else's grand design.

Relationships

Family

Other individuals

Enneth finds Dlyss to be not an unkind employer, but still a demanding and dogmatic one. Enneth has little trouble with the 'demanding', but the 'dogmatic' is less acceptable; she has little understanding of Dlyss' visions and little sympathy for the beliefs she has exported to the movement built around her, and is not inclined to conform to the Oracle's standards where it relates to her personal life. A particular source of tension is Dlyss' assertion that a duty of every good Chosen is the perpetuation of her kind; while Enneth is not completely averse to the idea of being a mother, she has no desire to set out specifically to achieve that purpose, feeling it should come in its own time, and that this is not any of Dlyss' business.

All in all, her feelings about the Oracle are complex. She regards her as youngster might regard an elder aunt - a figure of authority and respect, who knows a lot, but whose worldview is incomprehensible to, and uncomprehending of, a large and younger generation.

She has not known Einriss long, but is already becoming convinced that she won't ever quite understand him. He doesn't seem malicious, just distracted from reality and horribly unconcerned about the things he does, and she worries about how he will be used by Dlyss, who seems to be convinced of the consequences of her actions, and of their rightness. Enneth feels that he could do a lot of unwitting damage at her direction.
