Meekleaf potion

Meekleaf potions are a class of liquid preparations made by steeping the leaves and stems of the meekleaf, an herbaceous plant native to the western Cerulean Tangle. They are used to induce relaxation of the emotions and will, to various degrees and purposes.

Properties

Unmixed meekleaf extract is a watery, pale yellow liquid with a grassy and mildly bitter taste that is unpleasant to takmar and xtauh. The length of steeping affects the depth of its color and the potency of its effects.

The extract, however, is rarely applied in this state, and is usually mixed into strongly-flavored drink (or occasionally food) in order to disguise its taste. Because this invariably dilutes the effects somewhat, an extract that has been steeped for a long time is usually preferred.

The active ingredient in the extract induces calm and reduces resistance to suggestion. It is not physically addictive, but depending on how long it is applied, at what dosage, and what was experienced in the meantime, it may have unpredictable psychological effects when withdrawn. Victims who were kept controlled by strong potions for long periods, especially if subjected to trauma during that period, have been known to become more susceptible to extreme moods and outbursts of violent behavior than they had been before the potions were first applied.

Usage

Meekleaf potions are a widely-known phenomenon throughout the Tangle. The less powerful ones have legitimate uses, especially as a mild sedative or as a means for bringing relief from trauma, but the potions' notoriety comes from those made from extract that has been distilled to increase its effect. When potions of sufficient strength are applied, the will is relaxed to the point that the subject becomes extremely suggestible for a period (at typical doses) of up to several rests. This makes it a favored tool of thieves, kidnappers, and rapists.

It is partly for this reason that a long-standing cultural tradition in the Heartlands dictates that a host, when serving drinks, must pour all the drinks from the same vessel and drink first. Also for this reason, the overwhelming majority of governments in this region and beyond forbid the distillation of meekleaf extract on pain of death, and many of them attempt to strictly control the cultivation and harvesting of the plant. There are occasionally exceptions, if thought necessary, for use on witches, as strong meekleaf potions - if they can be successfully and regularly applied - are one of the more reliable ways of keeping them under control and discouraging them from using their magic freely.
