Sunset Isles

The Sunset Isles are a string of large islands off the west coast of southwestern Sekhaa. The above-water portions of a volcanic arc adjacent to a convergent plate boundary, the islands are large and rugged and remain volcanically and tectonically active.

The islands are inhabited by takmar and represent the westernmost limit of their populations. The islanders largely descend from three waves of settlement, the most recent of which was during the early Steel Era. There are between 20 and 25 languages spoken in the archipelago, most of which are descended from those used in the second and third waves of settlement and are part of a family that has few remaining members on the mainland. The remainder, derived from the languages of the first wave, are found only in the Sunset Isles, and are related only to each other or (in one case) have no known relations at all.

The islands are home to a few spices that are highly regarded in the outside world, so while contact with the mainland is very limited, trading missions ensure that it is at least regular. Small vessels from the nearby mainland visit using fixed seasonal routes, and there is an occasional visit from one of the larger and more daring Abethine vessels.
