Demarath has deeply mixed feelings regarding the [[mythology:imperial_religion:siathar:]]. On one hand, he appreciates all they do for maintaining a civilized society, having long ago convinced himself that civilization is a force for good in the world. On another, the particulars of takma society, and particularly his role in it, have left him feeling trapped and helpless. On yet another, the implications of there being no Siathar for witches (at least, to the extent he's ever heard about) have long since sunk in -- there is no place in the remains of the [[geopolitical:Empire:]] for people like him. This has led to a feeling of detachment from them -- though he may occasionally pray for advice or comfort, he has little expectation of them paying him any heed.

Towards the [[mythology:imperial_religion:lamnar:]], Demarath -- as of the time of his incarceration -- has no particular opinions, and generally treats them with reverential distance, like almost any sane takma would.

Demarath is attuned to Spark magic, with a particular affinity for electricity. That said, he also has a significant amount of skill at manipulating thermal energy, having spent more hours than he can count keeping a room full of fish cold.

Demarath is able to draw heat from his surroundings and store it within his body, either as heat or, more commonly, as raw magical energy. This allows him to cool his surroundings while also giving him energy to use on one of his other abilities.

One downside of this skill is that an energy buildup can easily escape his body if he's not sufficiently careful, to potentially disastrous consequences.

Demarath grew up in the [[geography:sekhaa:region:cerulean_tangle]], child of Vashareth zerfana Orlussai, a noblewoman with diplomatic ties to the [[geopolitical:alvraan:matriarch]] [[person:Ankorineth]]. Though the characteristic size differences between Chosen and Unchosen were small enough to be easily disregarded in his first couple cycles, his mother eventually found out that he was a "witch". She asked the Matriarch to spare his life -- not to mention her status -- and find something for him to do that could be useful to the Clan, ideally while keeping him out of the public eye. The Matriarch, having owed Vashareth a favor for saving her life during her ascent to power, agreed, and gave Demarath the job of keeping the Clan's main food storage rooms cold.

While he's known of [[person:Ilirith]]'s existence for quite some time -- though only obliquely, through rumors and hearsay -- Demarath never expected he'd actually have a chance of meeting the Matriarch's personal bodyguard and assassin. He certainly never expected to actually speak to the mysterious cloaked figure, let alone to find someone quite so friendly in such a role. While both his [[sessions:worldbuilding:2016-05-23|first exposure to her powers]] and her own occupation still leave him with a deeply uneasy feeling in his gut, her personality and willingness to treat him with kindness have rapidly warmed him to her.
