Titled Dark-Eyes, **Uvuun** - sometimes known as the Hungry One or the Lord of the Depths - is the [[mythology:imperial_religion:lamnar:|god]] of the uttermost depths of the sea. He concerns himself not with the waves and the winds and the passage of ships; but far down, where the light of [[universe:Mikurmiya:]] fails and all is night, where the water squeezes all who enter in its cold, tight embrace and does not let go, where the long slow currents of the ages pass without regard to the quickness of time far above, is the realm that is His. Out of all the gods, only [[mythology:imperial_religion:lamnar:seluurin|the]] [[mythology:imperial_religion:lamnar:khezri|Diarchs]] do not fear Him, for only they are older and more powerful than He. As all things upon [[universe:mikurmiya:avishraa]] came from His primal depths, so too do all things return to them, sooner or later, including the bodies and - if they have been judged unworthy - the souls of the dead. Rare indeed are those privileged to have returned from that realm in their lives, and those that do are seen as fortunate beyond measure. He is very likely the mythological conception of the [[Extrinsic:]] known as [[extrinsic:Hunger]]. ===== Divine signs and symbols ===== That Uvuun is only to be found in the bottomless depths of the sea - and not present or worshiped openly elsewhere - has historically meant that none had seen fit to assign a sigil to Him, to whom it would have meant nothing. However, the [[ethnicity:abethine:|Abethines]], the only ones who dare sail for long upon the roof of His realm, have somewhat more reason than most to know where Uvuun may reach them. They have developed the habit of placing markers, in the form of a square with a white upper half and a black lower half, at the edges of their harbors to warn ships that they approach deep water, and this has lately begun to see some adoption among other societies. ===== Worship ===== Uvuun is generally held to spurn the worship of mortals; they can give Him nothing that will satisfy Him. Those who foolishly seek to persuade Him to have mercy on the souls of those already gone at best invite His indifference - if they are in His realm at all, they have already been judged and found wanting - and, at worst, risk His cold fury; the unworthy souls there are His to feed upon, and He sees no purpose in depriving Himself of His meals. In most of the [[takma:]] world, it is held that the only sacrifices He accepts are those that take their own lives to deliver to Him... and while this may bring them comfort in their last moments, it brings them no salvation. That said, there are exceptions: it is relatively common among Abethine crews to sacrifice animals to Him for the safe passage of ships. And then, there are some scarred souls that believe that His rage may be diverted by hastening //others'// ends.
